Diamonds are a Girls Best Friend - Gina as Marilyn photo shoot

Ask any women how she feels when she wears genuine diamond jewellery and the answer most probably will be that she feels like a princess! During the summer I had the fun task of photographing local model and actress, Gina Travis, for the article in Barbara McKay’s Fall/Autumn Premier Bride magazine. The article I had conceptualized and designed was to show brides how they can look like a movie star on their wedding day. Gina was a pleasure to photograph and after she got over her initial nerves of wearing $250,000 worth of diamonds kindly provided by Lions Jewellers of Ballantyne, Gina soon became Marilyn Monroe. I was aiming to achieve a George Hurrell ‘Hollywood’ look in the photos and Gina gave me exactly what I was looking for. Keep your eye out for Gina as an extra sitting on the train in the upcoming movie ‘Leatherheads’ starring and directed by George Clooney, as well as Renee Zellwegger. Our photo shoot took place just days after Gina appeared on the local North Carolina movie set and she still had stars in her eyes after meeting and speaking to George Clooney himself.  Read the article

Wedding of the Month - Love in the City

Lindsey and Michael celebrated the union of their love on one of the picture perfect days I have had the privilege to be part of this year. On October 13th 2007 they tied the knot at the St. Patrick’s church and celebrated their reception at the premier venue of the Charlotte City Club, which stands 8 floors high with a beautiful view of the city. It was so much fun to hop aboard their horse and buggy for the ride from the Duke Mansion, where Lindsey and her ladies got ready, to the church and then on to the reception in town. I was so excited to have captured a fabulous portrait of them frolicking in the park with a gorgeous view of the Charlotte skyline.

In-hospital Birth Portraits Rave Reviews - Capture Baby's first breaths of life

It has been a great honor and privilege to be part of the most special and miraculous moments in any parents life. Over the past 4 months I’ve had the joy of being able to capture the wonderful moments of child birth and the arrival of several precious babies. My service called ‘’In-hospital Birth Portraits’’ is getting rave reviews and it is increasing in popularity. It entails me documenting the emotional moments during labor and delivery allowing Mom and Dad to focus on the task at hand. Not all parents like the labor process documented, so I often capture just the very first hours of baby’s life (during the initial 24 hours) and the resulting emotional moments between Mom, Dad and baby as they meet each other for the first time. While Mom is still recovering, I compile a precious musical slideshow that serves as a birth announcement to all friends and family. Read more about it on my Baby Photographer page.

Mothering Across Continents Charity (May 7th)
A charity close to own heart, Mothering Across Continents, is a non-profit organization that supports Aids orphans and vulnerable children in my home country of South Africa. Women from the North Carolina region are gathering to help make a difference in the lives of these children by hosting a Mother's Day event at the Wachovia Playhouse on May 7th 2007. ''Best of Weddings Contest'' My first US win

The American annual professional wedding photography ''Best of Weddings Contest'' sponsored by the WPPI and Eventpix took place during March, and I was so excited to picked as one of 12 semi-finalists in the category 'Wedding Humor'. This nation wide professional wedding photography competition attracts entries from across the USA. As a semi-finalist I won prizes in the form of a gallery print that was on display at the recent WPPI convention in Las Vegas, entrance into this photographer's convention, and tickets to an awards ceremony. Even though I didn't take the main prize, it was a great honor to be featured especially since it was the first American competition I've entered since moving here last summer.

This annual convention holds a print competition for professional photographer's through out the state, and merits are give to prints scoring 80 or higher. Wedding of the Month - Hilton Head Island

Beautiful venue you just have to see for yourself... (Click here to view the mini slideshow of this wedding)

I had the wonderful privilege of sharing in the special weekend celebration of Tamara and Jon's wedding on October 21st at Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. I had the opportunity to meet the bridal party at the rehearsal dinner the evening before as I was graciously hosted by the bridal couple at their party hotel. The big day took place at Wexford Plantation and what a spectacular place to exchange wedding vows!  We were blessed with ''picture perfect'' weather and the ceremony took place overlooking the yachts moored in the dock. We had to fight the light with only 30 minutes to spare to grab our romantic ''kissy'' shots and we captured the essence of the day. The romance and excitement lasted right into the evening and everyone had a ball dancing into the night. The happy couple headed off to Hawaii for their honeymoon.

Portrait Journal Collections

A Portrait Journal is a natural ''lifestyle'' portrait captured in an artistic way.  With this style of portrait you are presented with a collection of images that portrays the subject in a natural setting using natural light. No fancy studio equipment just me and my camera.  I see it as an invitation into a subjects environment to observe and capture the mood of the day.  I just love being invited to ''play'' at a child's home and once parents see the images of their little angles they fall in love with them all over again!

A Newborn Birthday Portrait is a collection of images of  baby's birth and their very first breaths of life.  Captured during the labor and delivery (Mom's modesty is sensitively considered), and the very first few days Mom and baby are still in hospital; these beautiful memories are artistically preserved for you to treasure forever.  Read more here...

Choose from our extensive range of products such as custom designed leather albums, coffee table books, designer bags, greetings cards, framed Heirloom art, Desk Art, and slideshows on DVD.

Portrait Party Concept

Earn yourself FREE portraits when you refer your friends and host a Portrait Party.   Just like the jewellery and Tupperware parties you've hosted at your home for years, your very own Portrait Party earns you rewards just for sharing your address book. Consider it a little bit of ''Me Time'' when you come and enjoy an evening of emotive and entertaining ''movies'', stimulating conversation and delicious snacks.

How it works is that you let me know when you can arrange a mini ''tea party'' for at least 3 of your friends when you supply the food and organize your get together.  The parties are hosted at my studio in Waxhaw (or at your home if you prefer), and I will give you a set of complimentary Portrait Party invites to hand to your guests that you can fill in and mail out, then keep track of your RSVP's.

How it works: For every friend that books a portrait session with Photo Lyrical you earn yourself $25 banked on your Gift Card just for being nice! Invite more friends and earn more credits so you can enjoy a complimentary portrait experience yourself.  Perfect for Mother's Day Out groups, Toddler groups, Church groups etc.

Wedding to appear on BBC TV

Charlotte & Michael's wedding documentary to appear on BBC 2...
The historical York Minster was the setting for Charlotte & Michael's wedding on April 29th 2006.  The British television channel, the BBC, produced a documentary of the Minster and is to feature the wedding in one of their episodes. The documentary about the York Minster will be on British screens around September, so keep an eye out for an excited lady photographer (that would be me) running around in the background organising the guests under the weight of 2 cameras.  Read the Press Release...
PRESS RELEASE - 10th May 2006
Wedding at York Minster to appear on BBC

The York Minster is to feature in a TV series this autumn on BBC 2. The series is to be a 6 part documentary about the York Minster and highlights the individuals who work there.

Local York resident and York Minster Visitor Guide, Steve Burton, was highlighted in one of the episodes as the father of the bride during the wedding of his only daughter, Charlotte Burton.

One of the many features the York Minster offers is the opportunity for local bridal couples to exchange wedding vows in the historical building. Charlotte and Michael Ero, were wed on a picture-perfect day on April 29th at the York Minster and the ceremony was officiated by The Reverend Canon Glyn Webster, Chancellor. The Stamford Bridge Singers, led by Mr. Michael Wiles, offered their harmonious melodies during the moving ceremony. A crowd of residents and tourists shared in the celebrations and gathered outside the Minster after the ceremony to cheer the couple on their auspicious day.

The happy couple enjoyed their story book wedding after a romantic courtship. Charlotte and Michael met after they went on a blind date after being set up by their mutual friends.

The wedding itself was a tale of two cities as it united Charlotte, who grew up in York, and Chicago born Michael, in a romantic setting. The celebrations were a multi national affair with guests travelling from afar a field as Chicago, San Fransisco, London, Los Angeles, Liverpool and even Leeds!

Yorkshire BIPP bestows 2 awards...
I'm delighted to have scooped 2 awards in this year's Yorkshire BIPP (British Institute of Professional Photographers) photo competition. As the ''Overall Social Photographer of the Year'' and the ''Avant Garde Wedding Photographer of the Year''.  I'm delighted to have 'beat the boys' in this male dominated association. The annual competition attracts entries from all professionally accredited photographers in the Yorkshire area, and I'm excited to have had my wedding photos gain some coverage. Read the Press Release...

20th April 2006 - Girls Rule in Regional Photo Competition

It was an all-girl win for two York based professional photographers in last nights' annual Yorkshire BIPP print competition. Kate Cooper, of Bailey Cooper Photography, plucked the award for 'Yorkshire Commercial Photographer of the Year'; and Mimika Cooney, of Photo Lyrical Photography, scooped the overall 'Yorkshire Social Photographer of the Year'.

Both ladies are members of the Yorkshire regional British Institute of Professional Photographers (BIPP), and every year the competition decides between the top class entries from professional photographers across the county. This year's competition attracted over 200 entries in 10 categories and each category resultes in 4 merit winners and one overall category winner.  The categories are grouped into 2 further disciplines: mainly the Commercial discipline that covers Advertising, Architectural, Press and PR, Fashion and Illustrative; and the other discipline of Social photography that covers Classical Wedding, Avant Garde Wedding, Studio Portrait, and Environmental Portrait.  Mimika also managed to grab a merit in the Illustrative category.

The British Institute of Professional Photography is the premier qualifying body for professional image makers in the UK with over 3500 national members covering every type of photography.  Largely a male dominant association, women in the photographic profession have had to break through the boundaries of stereotyping to level peg with their male counterparts.  The number and quality of female photographers is gaining momentum as more ladies decide to join the profession.

The BIPP holds a national annual competition called the British Professional Photography Awards (BPPA) and it gives members the opportunity to receive intense publicity as winners of this prestigious competition.  The exhibition travels to various high profile sites across the UK and overseas.  Both Kate and Mimika, who have previously won titles in the national competition, will be flying the flag for Yorkshire later in the year in October.
